The first time I read the book of Job, I saw a man seeking answers in an impossible situation. A man going through unfavorable circumstances and asking the same question everyone would in such a situation: "Why is this happening to me?"
But that’s not my focus today. After rereading it, I learned something new about Job's life that made me reflect on the potential of a man devoted to God.
Job was a prominent man in his time, full of wealth and riches, and so influential that his name alone could secure loans from banks and insurance companies. He was a man of loyalty, integrity, and devotion to the Holy One. He never allowed his riches to sway him away from his life of faith, nor did he allow his influence to alter his commitment to the path of righteousness.
Even the Almighty could find no one else in the world to boast about except him—not only to the holy beings but even to Satan the destroyer.
What a man!
What level of trust did the Lord have in him?
What level of sincerity did the Lord see in him?
What level of consecration and commitment did the Lord find in him?
These are questions I pondered on when considering why God allowed such drastic actions to be taken against Job—perhaps to confirm or test his trust and righteousness.
Amazingly, Job never denied the Lord. Instead of turning away, he worshipped the Lord at first and then began seeking answers to the questions troubling him. Even his beloved wife couldn’t make him curse the Lord. Despite all the unexpected hardships, Job remained faithful.
Till the very end, Job stayed true to God. He said something that struck my heart and made me realize that what we face in life should never alter our trust or weaken our commitment to God: "Though He slays me, yet will I trust Him."
I have concluded that if integrity and loyalty were a man, it would be called Job.
Job, along with other devoted men, both in the Bible and in our contemporary world, shows us that serving God in plenty and influence is possible. More importantly, serving God in times of lack, frustration, demotion, and loss is also possible.
Even when life's circumstances turn against us, we can still trust Him, for the Lord will never forsake or abandon us. Let's learn from the integrity and loyalty that Job exemplified, and apply it in our daily lives to strengthen our commitment and devotion to God. Doing this will make us live above every limitation the world could bring our way to deter us from serving God and make us victorious in our walk with the Lord.
